Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that occurs most often during the growth spurt just before puberty. Although scoliosis can be caused by conditions such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy, the cause of most scoliosis is unknown. About 3% of adolescents have scoliosis. Most cases of scoliosis are mild, but some spine deformities continue to get more severe as children grow. Severe scoliosis can be disabling. Especially a severe spinal curve can reduce the amount of space within the chest, making it difficult for the lungs to function properly. Chiropractors are among health practitioners that can either monitor or help scoliosis by maintaining proper spine functions and keep the spine free of vertebral subluxation.
Since there are many causes that lead to scoliosis, the Gonstead chiropractor’s first step is to determine the potential cause of patient’s scoliosis and ultimately, the purpose of Gonstead chiropractic care is to help the body’s potential to heal itself.
