Concussion Syndrome

A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that occurs by a blow to the head or body, a fall, or another type of injury that causes the brain to shake inside of the skull. There may be bruises or cuts on the head or there may not be any visible injuries. Many people think you may need to lose consciousness for a concussion to occur, but in reality that is not always the case.
There are many symptoms from concussion and you may experience all or just a few of them. Some symptoms are: confusion, altered balance, blurred vision, sensitivity to light/noise, headache, nausea/vomiting, slurred speech, ringing in ears, memory loss, difficulty concentrating, behavior changes, personality changes.
Concussions require proper intervention and management, otherwise it may cause a long-term injury- disability.
A Gonstead chiropractor will evaluate to determine first if there are any signs and symptoms of concussion as part of the physical examination. If it is suspected you are having a concussion you will be referred to a Specialist that manages and treats concussion. However, one important thing to note is the force that causes a concussion can cause vertebral subluxation too and many of the symptoms of subluxation can overlap with concussion.
Several patients that have headaches and vertigo post-concussion have reported chiropractic adjustments to help with those symptoms. Often, adjustments to remove vertebral subluxations from the upper cervical region can help with the symptoms that occur from a neck injury following a concussion. Remarkably, what we see is that chiropractic care enhances the potential body’s ability to heal itself.
