Back Pain

Lower back pain is one of the most common causes of people seeking either medical or chiropractic care. Low back pain is a very common health problem worldwide and a major cause of disability -affecting performance at work and general well-being. Low back pain can be acute, sub-acute, or chronic. Despite several risks factors have been identified (including occupational posture, depressive moods, obesity, body height and age), the causes of back pain can be often difficult to determine. Back pain is not a disease but a constellation of symptoms. It affects people of all ages, from children to the elderly and it is one of the most common reasons for seeking care. In 2010 the Global Burden of Disease Study estimated that low back pain is among the top 10 health conditions and injuries that account for the highest number of DALY's (Disability Adjusted life years) worldwide. The lifetime prevalence of non-specific (common) low back pain is around 60% to 70% in industrialized countries.
Since there are many causes that lead to back pain, the Gonstead chiropractor’s first step is to determine the cause of the patient's health condition and ultimately, the purpose of Gonstead chiropractic care is to help the body’s potential to heal itself. It is based on the scientific principle that restricted spinal movement leads to pain and reduced function and performance. Chiropractic care is non-invasive (i.e. non-surgical) and drug-free.
